冠词分为不定冠词（a、an）和定冠词（the）。

不定冠词a/an通常代表“某一个”或“某一类”事物。

其中大多数名词前用a，少部分发音以元音音素开头的单词前an。

举个例子：

I have a pen and an apple. 

我有一支钢笔和一个苹果。

Mr. Lee is an engineer. 

李先生是一位工程师。

定冠词the的意思为“这（那）个”，把它放在名词前面表示特指某个特定的事物。其主要用法有以下几种：

(1)特指双方都明白的人或物：

The desk is new. 

这是个新桌子。

(2)上文提过的人或事：

I have a book. The book is interesting. 

我有一本书，这本书很有趣。

(3)指世界上独一无二的事物：

the sun  太阳   the moon  月亮   the sky  天空

(4)某些乐器名词（西洋）前：

I can play the piano. 

我会弹钢琴。

(5)序数词、形容词最高级前：

Zhang Peng is the tallest boy in our class. 

张鹏是我们班里最高的男孩。

(6)姓氏复数形式前，表示一家人：

The Whites are watching TV now. 

怀特一家现在正在看电视。

(7)一些习惯用语和固定表达方式中：

in the morning  在早上

in the afternoon  在下午

in the evening  在晚上

on the left  在左边

还有几种特殊的情况规定名词前不能加冠词：

(1)国名、地名、人名等专有名词前通常不用冠词。如Sarah(萨拉)、Shanghai(上海)、China(中国)。

(2)季节、月份、星期等名词前通常不加冠词。如in winter(在冬天)、on Monday(在周一)、in May(在五月)。

(3)三餐、饭的名词前通常不用冠词。如for breakfast(早餐)、have lunch(午餐)、eat dinner(晚餐)。

(4)球类运动和棋类运动前不加冠词。如play football(踢足球)、play chess(下棋)。

(5)节日、假日等名词前通常不用冠词。如Christmas Day(圣诞节)、Children s Day(儿童节)。

(6)名词前已有this, that, my, his, some, every等词修饰时不用冠词。如that T-shirt(那件T恤)、my brother(我的弟弟)、her key(她的钥匙)。
